Citadel Malware Continues to Deliver Reveton Ransomware in Attempts to Extort Money

07/27/13—The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have recently received complaints regarding a ransomware campaign using the name of DHS to extort money from unsuspecting victims.

In May 2012, the IC3 posted an alert about the Citadel malware platform used to deliver ransomware known as Reveton. The ransomware directs victims to a download website, at which time it is installed on their computers. Ransomware is used to intimidate victims into paying a fine to “unlock” their computers. The ransomware has been called “FBI Ransomware” because it frequently uses the FBI’s name, but similar ransomware campaigns have used the names of other law enforcement agencies such as DHS and IC3.

As in other variations, the ransomware using the name of DHS produces a warning that accuses victims of violating various U.S. laws and locks their computers. To unlock their computers and avoid legal issues, victims are told they must pay a $300 fine via a prepaid money card.

This is not a legitimate communication from law enforcement, but rather is an attempt to extort money from the victim. If you have received this or something similar, do not follow the instructions in the warning, and do not attempt to pay the fine.

It is suggested that you:

Contact a reputable computer expert to assist with removing the malware.
File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Keep operating systems and legitimate antivirus and antispyware software updated.

All those emails go to spambox briggrin

Soo many new things you have to watch out for

U ever run into a site like this?

If you are asked to download, upgrade, or install the Adobe Flash Player on your computer while browsing the internet, please do not install it from the website that you are browsing. There are malicious websites or advertisements that will attempt to trick you into downloading and installing a malicious program disguised as the Adobe Flash Player.

If the Adobe Flash Player web browser plug-in is not installed on your computer, only download it from the following website:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If you have downloaded and installed the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player from the above website and you are still being asked install it, the website that you are on is either malicious or there is a malicious advertisement displaying the fake Adobe Flash Player link.

Because most persons are always anxious to watch a video online, they will quickly click on a link and install any software in order to do so. Doing so is very dangerous because you can download a malicious program, which will spy on you, steal your personal information, credit card information, or online accounts user name and password.

There are all kinds of these internet scams out there. They all feed off of the principle of social manipulation and to an extent as cinemax elequently described; the fears and desires of your average user. But its more than forcibly or indirectly attacking a person in this manner; rather both. The mpaa and riaa both broker deals with name brand companies and even conglomerates to further their own profits. Typically the mpaa will go before an individual producer or group active in making a (lets say; new blockbuster hit). Promising these individuals that they will mitigate the damage caused by pirateers (those who download pirated movies), the movie industries are compelled to accept; for a price of course. Then that is when we see the monkeys in their tailored suits coming after those who go on sites like the piratebay. These people to whom i reffer are social manipulators; and professions at it.

Tell me, have you ever gotten a threatening letter in the mail saying that you are in violation of (idk code 325.2 of the copyright act) in accordance to downloading pirated material.?? Here is the catch though if you have ever gotten one of these letters. If not a cease and desist order, it will ALWAYS be extortion. Pretty much they say, pay us xxx-xxxx amount of money and we will drop the case involving your illegal activities. They do this because ultimatly, the mpaa and their minions they hire to come after you, are fearful to go to court. Infact for the most part, their evidence is less than substantial, motives unclear, and appeal in court less than convincing. So they seek to extort and SCARE the person into paying a fine. All the while this is happening, they glorify those who have been successfully destroyed by their tactics (little grandma Yumnums who downloaded "The Expendables" was taken to court and fined half a million dollars, or the high school girl who downloads pirated albums of god forbid, Justin Beibers finest hits has to cough up 100k) They exemplify such people so the majority of others who never get caught will fear committing acts of piracy.

So the solution is not a brand new and enhanced virus protection software, encryption key, automated security blah blah, ..no. its teaching yourself not to be gullible, not to be saseptable to the ploys of social manipulation/precarious indoctrination of the mind ^^. seek to prevent a situation that could lead to negative results rather than a way to mitigate the damage of a negitive reaction, after its already happened
