Iraq is in Civil War

Reuters reports that over White House objections, various major U.S. news media will begin to refer to the conflict in Iraq as a civil war.

Outlets that have adopted the term "civil war" include the New York Times, the LA Times, the Christian Science Monitor, McClatchy Newspapers and NBC News. Fox News has no plans to make any changes.

What some are labeling the conflict "civil war," President Bush continues to prefer "sectarian violence." And he blames it all on Al Qaeda:

"What you're seeing on TV has started last February. It was an attempt by people to foment sectarian violence," he told a news conference with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves in Tallinn, Estonia. "There's a lot of sectarian violence taking place, fomented in my opinion because of the attacks by Al-Qaida causing people to seek reprisal," he added.
Continuing the spin, White House national security adviser Stephen Hadley said what is happening in Iraq is not "civil war" because the army, police, and government have still not yet split along sectarian lines.

Whether Al Qaeda or the U.S.-led invasion are to blame for Iraq's disintegration, it does not change the fact that Sunni-Shiite violence continues unabated. The Iraqi government's appearance of unity counts for little when the army and police are playing death squad militia by night. (Not to mention torture, beheadings, burnings and online execution lists.)

This denial reminds me of another conflict: Darfur. In Darfur, we witnessed posturing over labels like "genocide," "acts of genocide," "ethnic cleansing." In Iraq, we have "sectarian violence" and "acts of sectarian violence." I've even seen the term "sectarian war." Maybe soon the Bush administration will decide to meet somewhere the middle and declare the massacres happening in Iraq "acts of civil war."
I still don't know which word is the "correct" term for Darfur or for Iraq, but when words are so easily manipulated or politicized and the facts speak loud and clear for themselves, does it really matter?

I just came back from my 1st tour of Iraq. It sucks ass and we do need to help them a little longer, but we shouldn't leave our soldiers there. They don't have the proper supplies and shit for the war. We need to either step our game up and nuke the fucking country or pullout(Something Bush has never done). Or else we are going to hate our presidents and lose abunch of young/old men and women. I lost my cousin in an IED attack on our convoy and that shit was horrible, he died for no reason..we were sent out to fucking bring the Iraq police some m4's when their lazy asses could of have come get them from us.
