With his marriage over and his home life ripped apart by a messy divorce, the middle aged man decided he would go to his former in-laws' Christmas Eve party dressed in a Santa suit and armed with a gun.
When the 45-year-old arrived at the home around 11:30 p.m., he knocked on the door. An eight-year-old girl opened up, and that's when the rampage began.
First, the man shot the little girl in the face before opening fire on the partygoers inside, randomly blasting away as the people attempted to flee or hide.
Moments later, the man -- a former aerospace worker -- used a homemade pressurized device to douse the home with a flammable liquid. Then he torched the place.
With the home in flames, the man got into his rented vehicle, which was loaded with ammunition, and drove to his brother's home. Once inside, he shot himself in the head.
When the chaos ended, at least nine people were dead and the home in a quiet suburb near Los Angeles had been burned down to ground.
By all accounts, Bruce Pardo was a calm, gentle man who was popular and easy to talk to. Police said he had no history of violent behavior and no criminal record.
In years past, Pardo volunteered as an usher at his church's midnight mass on Christmas Eve, according to the Los Angeles Times. This year, he was expected to follow that tradition.
But according to witnesses and police, the man's rampage may have been an act of revenge aimed towards his ex-wife and her family. In fact, the divorce had been settled only a week earlier.
"It was not an amicable divorce," Covina police Lt. Pat Buchanan said.
On Friday afternoon, as investigators searched through the home's charred wreckage, Pardo's ex-wife and her parents were still unaccounted for and feared dead.
Nine unidentified bodies have been found inside the burned home.
Neighbor David Salgado told The Associated Press that he spotted police taking the eight-year-old girl to an ambulance as 15-metre flames ravaged the home.
"It was really ugly," said Salgado.
Jan Gregory, another neighbour, said she saw a young male run out of the home yelling "They shot my family!" around midnight.
Among the injured: a 16-year-old girl with a gunshot wound in her back, and a 20-year-old woman with a broken ankle, suffered after she jumped from an upper-level window.
The three victims, including the eight-year-old girl, are all in hospital but expected to recover.
About 45 kilometres away from the burned home, police found Pardo's body and two handguns at his brother's house in Sylmar, Calif. Outside the home, police found a wrecked car loaded with ammunition. Police said the car had exploded.
A woman who lived next to Pardo said he had moved into the neighbourhood about a year ago and lived with a woman and child. The family kept to themselves, the neighbour said.
But recently, the woman and child moved out of the home, leaving Pardo by himself, the neighbour added.

First of all, Noctres, and anyone else, before you try to put any words in my mouth.. I didn't say he should be allowed to do what he did, but the whole story stinks bad work from the authoritys side..

He was all calm on the outside, but it was all piling up inside him.
At that tragic point, he couldn't hold it in any longer.
Come to think of it, it'd end differently if he actually raged every now and then... |
