Just some food for thought, and investment theory.
Obviously the best way to make money right now is in the auction house. Turning things over, buying in bulk, doubling up on gems, brimstones, etc. With a little bit of attention, you can close to double your money every week (or quicker) just by buying low and selling high.
With the removal of the auction house in a couple months, this is going to go away (Obviously!) and we'll probably end up seeing something akin to Diablo II's trading, which doesn't revolve around a gold standard. Diablo II uses mostly runes to trade around, or Forum Gold on a site like JSP.
I guess the question is this: Will something like that happen in Diablo 3? Will gems become the standard of currency, or will gold remain the primary means of purchasing and selling items?
I wasn't around when the market shifted that way in Diablo 2. I don't know what caused it, or how smooth of a transition it was, so maybe someone with a little more background can shed some light on it.
Since gold isn't as bulky or at risk as it was in Diablo 2, I could understand keeping it as the primary currency. The issue with gold is, it makes tracking prices unstable and hard to establish. Bartered currency like gems will change in value alongside the drops, whereas gold will continue to inflate.
Maybe this is a little too theoretical or economically deep for the setting, but honestly.. I'm sitting on a lot of gold right now and I'd like to turn it into some kind of currency with staying power, since it's hard to tell what will happen after the AH goes down. If people decide Stones of Jordan are the way to go, I'd like to get some before they skyrocket in price, etc, and my gold becomes worthless. |

| I assume it will be like u said, the game will become similar to d2. sites like d3jsp d2jsp ect will be the platforms to trade these items. these sites will take over from what the auction house used to be |

This. Huge problem with the Auction House was/is that it lacked/lacks the social aspect of trading that makes sites like d2jsp flourish. Among other things... |

well, they have one last chance to revitalize things with "reaper of souls" expansion. No turning back this time, and i dont think the gamers will put up with anymore blizzard fk ups in the game. Its do or die, as they say |

In my opinion you should turn your gold into FGs. Also who knows what will happen after expansion, we might have to start over again. FGs will always be worth something

no, they are most certainly going to remove the rmah, and hopefully that will save the game. It will be much more like diablo 2, where sites like d3jsp, and d2jsp become the platforms for trading items.
obviously they cant stop all the botters, and screwups, however the death of the rmah and gold auction house will sanitize the "value system"..
You see, what we had happening was a "communist like" system. Instead of having to work hard and play the game to get items, you could simply go to the one stop shop to get anything u want. The auction house only served to devalue everything d3 had to offer. Every single item class was readily available to the mass public, so where was the fun in really working for these items?
Eventually the hackers, botters and random bugs in the system caused even more devaluing of the market, and the auction house only served to quicken the inevitable: the destruction of the system.
So hopefully the game will have a more "d2" like feel to it, and ppl will be more motivated to play the game and get items, rather than just go to the acution house, buy their shit and be done with the game. The auction house made it so everyone could easily master the game; THAT is why ppl got bored with it ^^ |

The majority have quit already. Blizzard has more to gain from removing the Auction House than keeping it in, at this point. |

Sorry off topic but how exactly is this the communist system? its actually closer to the capitalist system where Money (gold in this case) > Work (farming). |

Gold will still be used as a currency standard if anything. At least for smaller items. Otherwise we'll go back to the bartering system.
There are still considerable gold sinks in the game. |

| Gold will always be the inflated means of trades but people will use forums such as these to get the cheapest value for their buck. |
