The definitive gold-find barb strategy guide
Basic idea
You want to produce gold en mass for a variety of reasons
1.) Your mercenary keeps dying when you do chaos and baal runs.
2.) You like to shop those godlies with your shopbot.
3.) You are dirt poor and need to sell game gold for fg on jsp.
4.) You just plain like to gamble at vendors (don’t feel guilty for being a compulsive gambler!).
Well, if any or all of the three aforementioned reasons apply to you, you will find no better character to generate game gold.
The place to do it…..Hell Travincial.
The character…..An item find barbarian.
So here is the build. It is important to understand from the onset that this build will NOT be a melee barb build. You will spend your time supporting your mercenary while he does the killing and adds his goldfind percent to your total. I have tried melee barb builds but found them less effective. The runs are not that much quicker and the gold drops are abysmal. When this build is done you will be able to run hell Travincial safely and average over 600k game gold per run. The average run takes around 5 minutes.
Skills first
Do not touch the melee tree
Warcries—skills that will support you and your mercenary
Battle Orders – max it
Shout – max it
Item find – max it
Battle command – 1 point
Taunt – 1 point
War cry – 1 hard point (will take several prerequisites)
Masteries ---more skills that will support you and your mercenary
Throw mastery – 1 point
Increased speed – 1 point
Natural resist – max it
Iron skin – all your extra skill points go here
Gear
Helm – 100 goldfind crown of thieves lemmed
Amulet – Rare or magic ammie with goldfind and resists, skills are nice to
Armor – Dusk or archon wealth
Gloves --- Double upped chance guards (40mf is nice but not necessary)
Weapons --- 2x 2lemmed ali babas (or 2x 6lemmed crystal swords***)
Belt --- 80gf goldwrap
Rings – 2 x dwarfstar
Boots – 70 goldfind infernal strides
Switch
Life tap wand 2 open sockets (either put 2 x fal or 2 x ko in this save stats for vitality)
Lacerator (eth preferably to lower dexterity requirement)
Inventory
Decent barb torch
Decent annie
Nice gheeds (150+ goldfind, 15 vendor is nice and high mf is a bonus as well)
Tome of town portal
Horadric cube
7 x 10 goldfind scs (other mods like defense resist or mana are great here)
7 x 40 goldfind gcs (other mods like skills resists mana or defense are nice)
Merc
Eth infinity in a thresher or giant thresher (max attack speed is essential)
Eth crown of thieves upped to corona with nice ed and near 100 goldfind (lem this)
Glitched eth wealth (1k + ideally)
Stats
Just enough strength and dexterity to wear lacerator and crown of thieves. Make sure to account for strength and dexterity from your torch and anni as well as the dex from crown of thieves and the dexterity or strength you get from runes in your life tap wand. Do not count the dexterity from ali baba since it won’t be available on your weapon switch.
At around level 90 (which is what you want to gamble that godly circlet) or 91 (the level you need to be to gamble a +2 to all skills rare or magic amulet) you will have the following:
~2800% goldfind and 485% magic find when the merc finishes the kill
*** referenced above, if you go with 6 lemmed crystals you will gain about 150gf over lemmed alibabas but lose 180 mf. I opt for babas.
~2200% goldfind and 385% magic find during item find body pops
>4000 life
>6000 defense
~ 60% resist all (maxing resist all will depend on your ammie and charms to some extent)
80% fire resist stacked over by at least 20% (you will be immune to the hydras because of dwarfstars and extra fire resist from crown of thieves and infernal strides). This is where it counts and why I recommend crown and infernals over rares or socketed barb helms.
Ok now for the fun part, how to play the build.
Hotkeys
Battle orders, Shout, Battle command, Life tap (on switch), War cry, Taunt, Item find
Go to the trav way point, holler out BC, BO and Shout. BC first so that the skill counts toward your shout and battle orders (if you have used cta in the past this is a no brainer). Now, select taunt, you may need it to taunt in ghoul lords and/or hierophants who wont stop casting their annoying and sometimes deadly lightning bolts and blizzards. Once they are near you switch to warcry and spam it to stun them. Let your merc take them out and then pop the body with item find.
Once at the counsel
DON’T RUSH IN. This isn’t a tank build and will require some finesse, but that’s the fun part. Once you lure a couple counsel members out (or as soon as you see any of them) go to your weapon switch and cast a few life tap charges on them. This will keep your mercenary safe since he will be leeching plenty of life via life tap + the crushing blow on infinity. The reasons for infinity rather than some other polearm are as follows, 1.) no cold damage so bodies don’t explode and leave no corpses to pop, 2.) the lower enemy defense by 90% is critical for him to leech, stay alive and kill. I have tried other polearms that are both faster and do more damage but he ends up missing on a 3rd or more of his attacks. Infinity just can’t be beaten. Once the counsel is tapped walk in close and spam warcry to stun the non-unique counsel members. You will be surprised how much this reduces their casting of hydras and healing one another. You may have to move around a bit if the uniques like Maffer Dragon hand or Torc Icefist start tagging you for big damage. Just move to the other side of your mercenary. Your merc will tend to attack those critters that are attacking him. This means he focuses on the unique counsel members while you are stunning the champion counsel members. This is a good thing.
If you are having some trouble controlling your merc one trick is to duck down into durance level 1 and pop back up the stairs. This will prevent him from lagging behind and is a nifty strategy. Be careful however that you don’t pop back up into the entire pack of counsel members. It is best to take a few of them out either at the causeway between the water serpents or at the door leading into the room with the orb before diving directly into a monsterous pack.
Why do you have a lacerator again?
Sometimes the super unique counsel member spawn with a combination of stone skin or other modifications that render them physically immune. The chance to cast amplify damage on striking from lacerator will remove this immunity. It is important to always have your left skill set to throwing. If you don’t remove the phys immunity your merc will die since he cannot leech if he can’t do damage. With the conviction from infinity and your 1 point into throw mastery, you should have no trouble hitting and amping the phys immune baddie.
That’s the overall strategy. When you have killed them pop their bodies for more loot. I tend to pop them quickly after my merc kills them even if there are still several counsel members around. I try to never go to town in the middle of battle since it will often erase any bodies you haven’t yet had a chance to pop with item find. Any items you find and want to identify, stick in your Horadric cube. This will require you to click on it in your inventory etc..but after a few runs you get used to it, after all you are running almost 500mf so you will find uniques and set reqularly.
One other note: Beware of unique counsel members armed with the conviction aura or fanatizism. You will be able to dispatch these as well but just slow down and do only 2 or 3 enemies at a time when these auras are present. _____________________

Great guide, I have a full goldfind barb on non-ladder if anyone wants to buy him.
He worked great last ladder season, found me a blue circlet, 3lite, 20str 2os. _____________________
