Crime and the Internet (I) - Virtual Theft Charge
Police in the Netherlands have arrested a teenager suspected of stealing virtual objects inside a popular social networking site.

The 17-year-old, who has not been named, is alleged to have tricked players of 3D network site Habbo Hotel before removing a number of virtual items they had bought. It is believed to be the first time police in Europe have arrested someone for stealing virtual property (there have been previous cases in China - see below). It appears the youngster, working with up to 5 15-year olds lured victims into handing over their Habbo passwords by spoofing the Habbo website.

The website, which has around 6 million users each month, is popular among teenagers and younger web surfers. Users of the site are able to create and dress characters, or decorate their virtual hotel rooms with items and furniture bought using real money. Police in Amsterdam confirmed that six teenagers were being questioned over the theft, which is believed to have netted items worth around €4,000 (£2,800).

The sale of virtual goods for internet games and online worlds is a boom industry, with the market currently valued at around £750m a year. Despite the popularity of virtual environments such as World of Warcraft and Second Life, virtual property laws remain untested in most parts of the world.

Police in China have been tackling cases of virtual theft for years, including instances of organised gangs engaging in online robbery. Last year officers in the southern city of Shenzhen arrested more than 40 suspects who were accused of stealing up to 700,000 yuan (£45,500) worth of virtual items from users of one popular website, QQ.

SOOO... Scammers, soon you will be held legally accountable for your actions....maybe you will think more if theres a chance of fines, jail time, etc.

before anyone says anything... this is just 2 places laws.. its different for every nation/country... but with a precedent it means it only takes one good lawyer to make it law.

I forgot where this was but i found it. Im in the process of looking for more precedents of this kind of thing and to see if US has any precedents. Man it will be a sad and hilarious day when anyone with a scammer tag isnt just banned from the site but in jail lmao.

I realize this is a big joke but you have to think not in terms of the people who lose something like a SoJ or something. This is based on websites that you pay REAL money for items and services. Its like if you bought a chair for your house from a website and they took your money and never gave the chair. (poor example i know, but i dont know much about this sites lol).

When it moves into where the virtual world becomes blurred with the real world, you will find me in belize in the middle of the jungle smile

P.S. i am/was abc123

I think it would be an altogether fun experience. Because if what we see from scammers and the scammed. there would be alot of swearing and accusations. and that wouldnt fly in court. i bet the first d2 related theft case will have a lot of extra charges added to both parties lmao. Hell, it would be so funny that jerry springer might decide to settle all of the cases

This particular example i suppose would be phishing. But there are many other precedents involving actual items on games such as WoW, Runescape, and others. This is just a nicely put together article. Also, apparently there are gangs of chinese mafia doing some of this scamming on WoW. making millions
