It takes practise.
My first sig was absolutely terrible.

I suggest downloading .psd files of sigs people made.
They help a lot in understanding layer modes, opacity, fill, layer masks, adjustment layers and clipping masks.
Here's a few.
Code:
http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/330/9/2/upsidedown_psd_pack_v5_by_um0p3pisdn-d33n04p.rar

http://www.mediafire.com/?9dbb6lk6a6om01q

http://www.mediafire.com/?fbxr639j4t99k0p

Also search Deviant Art for c4d and brush packs.
planetrenders.net is a good place for renders

That's what I am doing
but it's hard to come up with something out of the blue, like when people request stuff
you can't just follow a tut for that

Don't work on requests until you can do stuff.
Just practise the basics on whatever you want, then start worrying about what other people want.

brushes you make on your own
otherwise you'll never know how they work exactly

and if you just started psd files wont help much
instet of that watch video tuts and follow easy written tuts
