Blocking
Blocking determines your chance to defend against physical melee and ranged attacks. If you block an attack you will receive no damage. If you run your mouse over your Defense on the Character Screen you will see a percentage to block if you are carrying a Shield or Necromancer Shrunken Heads. If you do not have a shield or Shrunken Heads you will not see this listed.
When a player blocks, that is, after a hit has already occurred, probability is computed that a player will block as follows:
Total Blocking = (Blocking * (Dexterity - 15)) / (Character Level * 2)
Blocking = A total of the Blocking on all of your items.
To raise your % Chance to Block spend more points in Dexterity in addition to getting higher % Chance to Block via items. The block value itself is a combination of a value inherent to that particular player class, and any other block bonuses from items. This value is capped at 75%. If the roll of the dice denies a true block, or if the player can't block at all, then and only then, are skills such as Amazon Avoid and Assassin Weapon Block checked for blocking.
Note that if a player is running, the Total Blocking percentage is reduced to 1/3rd of its original value, with a cap of 25%.
Shields are an excellent way to increase one's defense in combat. The holy Paladins of Zakarum are even said to use them as weapons. Wielding a shield increases your character's defensive rating. Additionally, some shields can completely block an attack. Only Barbarians may wield both a shield and a two-handed weapon.
You can only equip one shield at once.
Barbarians cannot dual-wield shields.
Shields cannot be used to attack monsters, they will do no damage.
Shields list Smite Damage for the Paladin which is a Paladin Combat Skill.
What do Shields Block?
Any melee attack and any ranged attack with physical damage or delivered physically, like Exploding Arrow.
How does Blocking work?
Blocking always works against physical attacks. 75% Blocking will indeed stop 75% of attacks from hitting, regardless of whether you are attacking, or standing, or whatnot. Note: that if a player is moving, the block percentage is reduced to 1/3rd of its original value. Think of it as "resist physical". The block animation will only play if you are not doing anything else. For more information go here.
Is there a Cap on the % Chance to Block?
Yes, 75% is max.
Is % Chance to Block Class Specific?
Yes, different classes may see different numbers.

max block % = 75%
well youll have 0% block without a shield
you just need to add dexterity until it says 75% chance to block because it varies with level. you can see your chance to block % to the right of dexterity in your character screen. |
