You have this 97 dollar shirt that you want to buy

you borrow 50 from your mom and 50 from your dad

You get 3 dollars back.

Give 1 to your mom which now you owe 49
Give 1 to your dad which now you owe 49

That leaves you in debt at 98 dollars

Plus the 1 dollar that you kept

why doesn't this equal 100?

I'm stumped!!

leaves you in debt 98$
minus the 1$ you kept = 97$ - the price of the shirt.

on another note

say you give your dad the 3$ back
so you owe 47 and 50 which puts you back to 97$ debt.

either way, your debt is 97$ and that's the number you're trying to reach not 100.
combine your parents and money into one person call Jim

when you buy the shirt, you give jim 3$ back. you're at 97$
97 is the number you're looking for. the extra 3 shouldn't play a role. since you are 97$ in debt, the paid/owed amount should always = 97

unless you spend the 3$ - which changes everything.
if the 3$ goes back to paying it off then 97 is the target number.

Another way to understand this problem would be to compare it to the following problem:

You have this 1 dollar shirt that you want to buy

you borrow 50 from your mom and 50 from your dad

You get 99 dollars back.

Give 49 to your mom which now you owe 1
Give 49 to your dad which now you owe 1

That leaves you in debt at 2 dollars

Plus the 1 dollar that you kept

why doesn't this equal 100?

Well, the point is that it is easy to see that it shouldn't equal 100

Adding on to what people have said already, here is another way to explain the solution...

There's a problem when you assume you are at $98 debt after giving your mom and dad each $1.

When you buy the shirt for $97 and get $3 back, you're still $100 in debt to your parents since you haven't given them any money back. That $100 is just in a different form (money is now in the shirt).

When you do give them $1 each, it is right to say that the debt has decreased to $98 since you are returning $2. However, that $1 that you kept for yourself is still in your possession which originally belonged to them. You have to take this $1 into account so you should be at $97 in debt, not $98.
